If you think this Blue Pea Nasi Lemak and Rendang Chicken look kind of familiar, you are probably right… Previously known as Jia Xiang Nasi Lemak (家香), this humble outfit by young couple Shawn and Stephy has evolved and rebranded as “Simple。简”, and they are in the midst of expanding their outreach to a wider audience.

Hailing from the state of Kedah in northwestern Malaysia, co-founder Shawn was born in a small Malay village and grew up eating home cooked dishes lovingly made by his 80-year old grandmother, whose signature dish was nasi lemak dyed with butterfly pea flowers plucked from their home garden.

Blessed with his grandmother’s culinary genes, Shawn developed a passion for cooking and used to work as a chef for a Chinese restaurant group before striking out on his own. He inherited his grandmother’s recipes and improvised them with his personal touch. Every part of the dish is made from scratch, using only natural ingredients to extract the blue pigment, each plate of nasi lemak is never quite the same…

Since 2017, their Nyonya-inspired dishes have garnered rave reviews from food blogs like Miss Tam Chiak, ieatishootipost, SG Food on Foot, Sethlui, Eatbook as well as media outlets like Channel 8, YES933FM, The Straits Times and Mothership… etc… However, if they are still not on your radar, it’s time to get acquainted with them at Culture Spoon!
